Over 50 Hours Go Into Handcrafting Each Coffee Machine
Handcrafted by our award-winning Parisian sculptor, Jean-Luc Rieutort spends more than 50 hours chiselling each coffeemaker. In his work, he brings to life the exceptional craftsmanship seen in fine jewellery.
Each Royal Paris machine features two exquisite Baccarat glass pieces. The glasswork is custom-made exclusively at the Baccarat factory in Nancy, France. Each piece is mouth blown, etched, and hand-painted in 24K gold.
The machine is firmly mounted on a semi-precious stone base made of malachite, black obsidian, or azurite and is custom-polished and produced in Germany.
The machines are finished with 24K 10 macron gold or silver plating by a well-established fine jewellery company in Paris.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BALANCING SYPHONS
As coffee drinking became prominent across Europe in the 1850's, coffee brewers experiemented with ways to avoid boiling their coffee, which degraded its overall quality. They experimented with different methods and invented syphon brewing, where two flasks are placed one above the other, using vapor pressure and gravity to produce coffee. In 1842, the Bastien patent improved upon this design by placing the two flasks side by side, held together by a single crosspiece. This balancing syphons that artfully combined form and function quickly spread across high society in Europe.
In 1844, Louis Gabet took out a patent in France. The Gabet model included a counterpoise which extinguished the heat from the spirit lamp, which made the process safe and automatic.
For this design, the weight of the cold water in the right flask holds open the lid of the spirit lamp. When the water is heated and vapourized, passing through to the left flask, the counterpoise action flips the spirit lamp lid shut and extinguishes the flame. Once the air in the left flask cools, the vacuum draws the coffee back into the right flask, ready to be poured out.
Soon after the Gabet model was released, doctors, mathematicians, pharmacists, cafe owners, as well as metalsmiths and glass makers added their own innovations to the balancing syphons, making artistic and functional improvements to its design and materials.
Balancing syphons are prized for producing a clear and flawless brew and became cherised dining pieces in royal households across Europe. Royal Paris reignites these memories of imperial times, honoring the rich history of innovation that defines the balancing syphons.
